Orthotics
The human foot has 28 bones, 19 muscles and 107 ligaments. It is no wonder that we are prone to pain and discomfort, some of us on a daily basis! When the pain or discomfort is too much, or if there is an underlying disease process, many turn to the use of foot orthoses, commonly called foot orthotics.
Foot orthoses are dispensed by many individuals, however a select group of medical practitioners are appropriately trained to dispense custom foot orthoses. A Certified Pedorthist (Canada) is one of the few medical professionals educated in the design, fit, manufacture, and modification of footwear and foot orthoses.
At Stride Orthopaedics we follow a three step process for our patients.
STEP #1
Assessment
- An appointment is required for an orthotic assessment
- Check with the requirements of your Extended Health Care Plan
- Prescription from a primary care provider may be necessary
- A report to your primary care provider can be provided after assessment if needed
- The initial appointment will be 30-60 minutes depending on complexity
- The assessment will include observation, palpation, range of motion testing, muscle function, gait analysis and other special tests based on your specific condition
- A three dimensional model will be created using either laser scanning, impression foam or plaster of Paris casting – at the discretion of your treating Pedorthist
- Bring your usual footwear, loose fitting clothing and any paperwork
STEP #2
Dispensing Appointment
- This will be booked at the end of your assessment appointment, typically 2-3 weeks after your first appointment
- Bring your expected footwear. If you are needing footwear, please mention this at the time of your booking.
- Your devices will be trimmed, a fit check will be performed, and an additional gait assessment to ensure proper correction
- Footwear recommendations will be provided
STEP #3
Follow Up
- We pride ourselves in the care we provide to our patients
- Six months of free follow up and adjustments is offered to all of our patients
- An appointment is required for this, to ensure we are focussed on your care and that your treating Pedorthist is available to you
